Cub Camp 2006

photo of the flagCub camp 2006 saw approximately 24 Cubs attending an fun-filled weekend of activities and games.  Camp was officially opened by flag break followed by a meeting to outline boundaries and discuss the programme for the weekend.

As many of the cubs will tell you, it generally involves a lot of running around. This was followed by hot soup before a bedtime story was told by one of the leaders as the cubs sat around a crackling fire.

Early on a fine Saturday morning, the cubs decided to treat the leaders to a rousing rendition of “there once was cowboy, all dressed in red” before breakfast. Once everybody was sufficiently full, and washing up duties had been done, the cubs went swimming.

After their compulsory washing activity (as cubs do tend to have an aversion to hygiene when on camp)  cubs and leaders alike spent the morning in the woods building bivouac shelters. The cubs had a great time collecting wood and leaves to build the shelters, as well as discovering a muddy swamp area. One lost shoe later, leaders decided we had enough materials (and muddy cubs) to start the construction of a very good shelter.

The second activity of the day was Archery, everyone was given opportunity to shoot at a target using a bow and arrow. Leaders found motivation to hit the target was duly increased when a packet of sweets was pinned to it and whoever hit it got to eat the sweets.

After dinner, cubs prepared for the evening Camp Fire. Great fun was had by all as 13th Maidenhead treated the camp site to a medley of camp fire songs with various actions. No camp fire would be complete without hot chocolate and marshmallows which were toasted, and in some cases cremated, with great enthusiasm.

After a large breakfast on Sunday morning there was a “Cubs Own” meeting whereby cubs were encouraged to discuss and reflect on both their place in the world and on current events in order to develop their spirituality. This was followed by an abseiling activity which the cubs enjoyed immensely. Lunch was a modern take on the traditional scouting method of backwoods cooking (cooking on a fire without utensils) in the form of cheese and ham toasted sandwiches.

Once cubs had assisted in packing away their kit and tidying up the camp site, they embarked on an assault course activity. Once this had been completed there was time for one more litter sweep of the area that 13th Maidenhead had occupied before the final flag down and closing ceremony.

All the Cubs thoroughly enjoyed the camp and we are looking forward to next year.
